Visit the Royal Castle of Collioure: History and Tips

The Royal Castle of Collioure: A Fortress by the Sea

Casa Païral welcomes you to the heart of Collioure, the ideal starting point to discover the historical monuments that make our town famous. Majestically perched on schist rock, the Royal Castle of Collioure is a witness to nearly eight centuries of turbulent history. A true sentinel of the sea, this unique fortress in France is a must-see for anyone wishing to understand the strategic past of the Côte Vermeille and admire one of the most beautiful panoramas of the Mediterranean.

A Multi-Faceted History: From the Kings of Majorca to Vauban

The castle's history truly begins in the 13th century. At that time, it became the summer residence of the Kings of Majorca, who transformed an old medieval fortification into a refined royal palace. It was during this "golden" period that the castle took on its current structure with its main courtyard and royal apartments. Collioure was then the main port of the Kingdom of Majorca, a major commercial and political crossroads.

Over the centuries, the castle changed hands and functions. After being under Aragonese and then Spanish rule, it became a leading military fortress after the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659. The famous engineer Vauban then intervened to modernize the defenses: he leveled part of the old village to build the impressive ramparts and moats we admire today, transforming the residential palace into an impregnable citadel.

A Visit Between Vaulted Rooms and Spectacular Ramparts

Today, the Royal Castle belongs to the Departmental Council of the Pyrénées-Orientales and is open to visitors year-round. Passing through its heavy gates, you plunge into a labyrinth of galleries, guardrooms, and chapels. The tour allows you to explore different eras of construction, from Romanesque foundations to 17th-century military developments. The spaces are vast, and the local stone gives the site a solemn and powerful atmosphere.

The highlight of the visit is undoubtedly the walk along the ramparts. From the parapet walks, the view is breathtaking. On one side, you overlook the harbor of Collioure and its famous bell tower; on the other, you gaze at the terraced vineyards climbing the hills and the bay stretching towards the open sea. It is the perfect place to take memorable photos and capture the harmony between stone architecture and the blue Mediterranean.

Practical Tips for Your Historical Visit

To get the most out of your exploration, allow about an hour and a half for the visit. The castle is located right in the center, at the junction between the Mouré district and the harbor. We recommend going at the end of the day to enjoy the golden light that sets the walls ablaze and offers a magical sight over the bay.

Parking in the immediate vicinity of the castle is almost impossible. For your comfort and peace of mind, Casa Païral offers its private paid parking lot within the establishment. You can leave your vehicle safely at the hotel and reach the entrance of the Royal Castle in less than five minutes on foot. After your journey through time, you will appreciate returning to the serenity of our Mediterranean garden.
