Casa Païral welcomes you to the heart of Collioure to experience moments of rare emotional intensity, away from the summer bustle. On Friday, April 3rd, 2026, our village will host one of the most mysterious and poignant traditions in Catalan culture: the Sanch procession. This event, taking place every Good Friday, transforms our colorful streets into a setting of reflection and fervor, offering a solemn and authentic face to our city.
The brotherhood of the Sanch ("Blood" in Catalan) was founded in 1416 in Perpignan by the Dominican Vincent Ferrer. Originally, its mission was to accompany those condemned to death to the scaffold to provide them with a Christian burial and, above all, to protect them from public lynching. To guarantee the anonymity of both penitents and the condemned, everyone wore the "caperutxa," a long robe with a pointed hood hiding the face.
In Collioure, this tradition is deeply rooted in local heritage. Each year, the procession commemorates the Passion of Christ through a life-sized Stations of the Cross in the old village. It is not just a religious ceremony; it is a true cultural performance that binds generations of Collioure residents together, perpetuating a medieval heritage that has remained almost unchanged for centuries.
On Good Friday, April 3rd, 2026, as night falls, silence will envelop the harbor of Collioure. The procession traditionally starts from the Notre-Dame-des-Anges church. The cortege moves to the slow, muffled rhythm of drums veiled in black, creating an atmosphere of tension and respect. The penitents, dressed in their black or red robes, wander through the narrow, cobbled streets of the Mouré district, lit only by the glow of torches and flambeaux.
The "Misteris", heavy platforms carried on men's shoulders representing scenes of the Passion, sway to the rhythm of the bearers' steps. The passage of the procession under flowered balconies and in front of Collioure’s colorful facades creates a striking visual contrast. It is a total sensory experience where sounds, the scent of incense, and flickering light transport spectators to another era. The silence of the crowd, broken only by the sound of bells and drums, is one of the most striking aspects of this evening.
Witnessing the Sanch procession is an experience that touches all travelers, whether they are believers or simply lovers of history and tradition. It is a unique opportunity to see Collioure from a different angle—darker but also more majestic. The town, usually so joyful and bright, puts on its mourning clothes for a few hours, revealing the depth of its Catalan soul.
Attending this event on April 3rd, 2026, will allow you to understand the resilience of our culture. Despite the passage of time and the rise of tourism, Collioure jealously guards its rites. For photographers and culture enthusiasts, the Sanch offers scenes of incomparable dramatic beauty, with the silhouettes of penitents outlined against the stone walls of the Royal Castle or along Boramar beach.
The Sanch procession attracts many visitors from across the region. As the streets of the historic center are very narrow, we advise you to find a spot along the route at least an hour before the ceremony begins for good visibility. It is important to respect the silence and not use flash photography during the penitents' passage to preserve the solemnity of the moment.
Parking in the village is extremely regulated and often full during this major religious event. For your peace of mind, Casa Païral offers its private paid parking lot within the establishment. You can leave your vehicle safely and reach the Notre-Dame-des-Anges church or the Mouré streets within a few minutes' walk. After the emotion of the procession, you will appreciate the calm of our hotel to reflect on this timeless evening.
